Australian music legends unite for the 2004 Tsunami orphaned children
June 7 – June 13, 2011
Australian music legends Jimmy Barnes, Jon Stevens and Party Animals Angry Anderson, Swanee and Kevin Borich will perform for “Bands Across the Water”, a unique entertainment event at Mukdara Resort in Khao Lak, Thailand in June to raise awareness and funds for Hands Across the Water, a charity set up by former Australian Forensic Police Officer Peter Baines to support the orphans of the 2004 Tsunami in Phuket.
As Jimmy Barnes explains, “My wife Jane is Thai and that means I have spent a lot of time with the Thai people and have seen how warm and giving they are. Children deserve a good start in life. I am very happy to be involved with Hands Across the Water so I can do my bit to help bring happiness and hope to the wonderful children of Thailand. Please support Hands Across the Water.
Bands Across the Water was set up as a direct result of former forensic Peter Baines personally witnessing the devastating effects of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Peter worked in Thailand as part of the response team following the Tsunami. During his time in Thailand, Peter worked with Gill Williams from the UK Police who introduced him to the needs of a number of Thai children who lost both parents and were living in a tent. Sadly, many had also lost members of their extended families and their homes and villages were destroyed.
Peter wanted to contribute in a more meaningful way to the lives of the many children who had been orphaned by the Tsunami and it was through this belief that with Gill, Hands Across the Water Australia and UK was born in 2005.
Founder and chairman, Peter Baines recognises that just because it is 6 years since the Tsunami doesn't mean the problems have gone away. “The recent events in Australia with the floods, cyclones and bush fires and the tragic earthquake in Christchurch which has claimed so many lives reinforces that there will always be another tragedy which requires our support. There is a need to support those in crisis, but what I have learnt from working in Thailand after the Tsunami is that our long term commitment is required for the most vulnerable.
Just because we no longer read about the needs of the kids or the community doesn't mean the needs have gone away. Bands Across the Water is committed to the long term support of the community. I can't wait to return to hear the bands rock the beaches in June. Through music we will bring communities and countries together. “
Aussie country bands Simply Bushed and Luke O’Shea & Medicine Wheel will also be part of entertainment line-up. A holiday of a life time with the unique opportunity for music fans to be up close and personal with their music heroes while helping make a difference to the local community in Khoa Lak!
